In any area of our life that we do not empower, somebody else will overpower us. The only way society can change this set of circumstances, is if there is more advantage than disadvantage to changing it. Right now, society does not perceive there to be enough advantages to warrant a change. So the only way to make the change, is if women stand up and empower themselves.
The first thing that a woman can do when asking for a promotion is to identify the responsibilities she was hired to fulfill. Show your track record, how you have done everything expected of you and more, and include all your achievements along the way. Illustrate what you have learned since you were hired, and how your skills set has improved. Document the additional responsibilities and accountabilities you have taken on. Make sure that you have the education and the skills, and whatever it takes to take on the responsibility of the more senior position. To do that, you would have continuously asked for more accountabilities so you that you would have become more indispensable.
